New Delhi: The second mahapanchayat held at Rajghat in New Delhi has given 15 days time to the Delhi Government to stop its controversial demolition drive.
Around 2,000 people from 364 villages on Delhi's suburbs attended the meet. They were protesting against the Delhi High Court order to pull down illegal commercial properties in the 'Lal Dora' area of the city.
Political bigwigs like Sharad Yadav, Sajjan Kumar and Ajit Singh were among the protestors.
A strong resentment has been brewing in the capital's rural belt over the MCD's demolition drive. The protestors threatened to hold yet another mahapanchayat if the government didn't act within the next fortnight.
As many as 1081 properties have been targeted by MCD during its one-and-a-half-month-old demolition drive against illegal constructions.
The corporation also took action against 23 other properties, including eight commercial, the official said.
Meanwhile, MCD bulldozers tore apart the remainder of 1, MG Mall on Saturday and pressed into service cranes to remove heavy electrical gadgets such as gensets from 2, MG shopping complex.
A senior MCD official said demolition work on 2, MG Road will resume on Monday and added that all the commercial outlets in the area would be targeted as part of the drive.
MG Road has the outlets of some of the best-known designers in the Indian fashion industry.
