New Delhi: A minor earthquake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale, shook several parts of North India on Saturday but there was no immediate report of any loss of life or property.
The tremors originated from the Indo-Nepal border on western side of Nepal, latitude 29.6 and longitude 80.8, and were felt in Delhi and NCR at 5:02 pm, the Indian Meteorological Department said.
Residents of Delhi, NCR and Chandigarh tweeted and called each other reporting the tremors. The Delhi Metro service was reportedly disrupted for a brief time as trains came to halt at the time of the quake.
Tremors were also felt in Uttarkashi, Champawat and Pithoragarh. No casualties were reported.
"The quake was epicentred at Indo-Nepal border," a senior Met department official said. Police and fire brigade said there were no reports of casualty or damage to property.
India was hit by one of its deadliest quakes on this day in 1905 in Himachal's Kangra area and Uttaranchal's Dehra Dun resulting in 19,000 deaths.
