THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF councillors of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation laid a siege to the office of the Kerala State Industrial Enterprises (KSIE) on Saturday alleging that the KSIE had lagged in the supply of street lamps to the Corporation. The LDF Parliamentary Party, in a statement here, said the councillors had also blocked Sree kumar, the marketing manager of KSIE, as part of their protest. According to the statement, the KSIE had agreed to supply 1.2 lakh tubelights and 5,000 sodium vapour lamps to the Corporation for use as street lamps across the city. But the company has been delaying the supply for over three months.‘’The councillors were forced to stage the protest as electrical spare parts were in shortage and a situation had arisen where the entire city was in darkness,’’ LDF parliamentary party secretary V S Padmakumar said. The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has not defaulted on payments to the KSIE. The company had agreed to make good the supply last Monday, but did not keep its promise. The nearly-three-hour strike was called off after the KSIE agreed to begin supply of the spare parts by Saturday evening itself and also agreed to supply 65,000 tube lights and 5,000 sodium vapour lamps by Wednesday, Padmakumar, who heads the Works Standing Committee in the council, said.Welfare Standing Committee chairman Palayam Rajan, Development Standing Committee chairperson Shajida Nasar and LDF parliamentary party chief whip G Vinod were among those present. The strike by the councillors comes in the wake of increasing complaints that street lights in various part of the city were dysfunctional, putting the public to intense hardship, with quite a few areas of the city remaining in darkness once dusk fell.
