THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has decided to relieve Assistant Commissioner of Police Radhakrishna Pillai of the law and order charge for firing at SFI activists in Kozhikode. The decision is based on a report submitted by Additional Chief Secretary K Jayakumar. The government rejected the Opposition’s demands for the ACP’s suspension and a judicial inquiry. The Additional Chief Secretary’s report states that the firing could have been avoided and that the police officer’s assessment of the ground situation was wrong, the Chief Minister informed the Assembly on Thursday.“The initial report by DGP Jacob Punnoose has, in general, justified the police action. That is why the state government asked the Additional Chief Secretary to look into the matter. His report is slightly different from that of the DGP,” Chandy said. The Chief Minister, however, did not table the reports submitted by either the DGP or the Additional Chief Secretary, which angered the Opposition.Reiterating its demand that the officer be suspended pending a judicial inquiry and protesting against the UDF stand that the reports need not be tabled, the Opposition staged a walkout.Chandy shot back at the LDF saying that it had not taken any action against the then Kasargod SP who shot and killed one person in Kasargod during the LDF rule. Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan denied the allegation, saying that the LDF promptly ordered a judicial inquiry, unlike the UDF.“The Chief Minister’s justification for not tabling the reports was unsatisfactory,” he said.
