THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM politburo member and Deputy leader of the Opposition Kodiyeri Balakrishnan called on Neyyattinkara Bishop Vincent Samuel of the Latin Catholic Church on Tuesday and held discussions with him.Kodiyeri arrived at the Bishop’s house accompanied by CPM district secretary Kadakampally Surendran and former area committee secretary C K Hareendran. The visit assumes significance in view of the upcoming byelection in the Neyyattinkara constituency which was necessitated following the resignation of R Selvaraj. Kodiyeri later told mediapersons that the visit was a courtesy visit and it was not a new thing to visit the Bishop’s House.“We had visited the Bishop’s house many times. When Congressmen attacked the Bishop’s House we had come to protect it,” Kodiyeri said. He said they discussed the problems of the coastal community, especially the fishermen’s plight following the firing incident from the Italian ship which killed two fishermen. He pointed out that some 300 people from the area had lost their lives in sea-related mishaps.Asked about the LDF candidate for the byelection, Kodiyeri said a very familiar person having sufficient winning prospects would be fielded as the LDF candidate.
