Khanduri – who had been the favourite to become chief minister - is to prove his majority in the Assembly by March 20.

New Delhi: The hill state of Uttarakhand is in for a change of guard with senior BJP leader B C Khanduri being invited to form government by Governor Sudarshan Agarwal.

Khanduri – who had been the favourite to become the state’s chief minister - to prove his majority in the state Assembly by March 20.

However, Khanduri, who seemed confident about proving his majority, said the swearing-in ceremony would be held only after March 6 due to Holi.

The BJP has a strength of 34 MLAs and fell short of majority in the election to the 70-member House (with an effective strength of 69) by one seat.

Seventy-two-year-old Khanduri is a former army engineer and was elected the leader of BJP legislature party on Thursday, claimed the support of Rajendra Singh Bhandari, an independent MLA from Nandprayag.

When reminded that BJP leader Gopinath Munde had claimed yesterday the support of two independent MLAs, Khanduri said "so far, BJP has received the letter of support from only Bhandari."

All the three independent MLAs had contested the poll as Congress rebels. Uttarakhand Kranti Dal with three MLAs has given issue-based support to BJP to form government.
