New Delhi: Kashmir Singh, who has been languishing in a Pakistani jail for 35 years, is expected to be released on Monday but will be back to India only on Tuesday.
Kashmir will be going to Nankana Saheb near Lahore after being released from the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore where he was on death row.
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf pardoned him on February 28.
Pakistan's Human Rights Minister Ansar Burney plans to accompany Singh to his native village of Nangal Chouran in Hoshiarpur (Punjab).
Pakistan is hoping to use the occasion to request a similar release of Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails.
Kashmir was arrested in Rawalpindi in 1973. He was accused of being a spy and thereafter sentenced to death.
He remained on death row until Burney helped him locate his family and secured his release.
“We have been writing to governments for ages but didn’t receive any reaction ever. We had written a letter to UNO and I think that has been responsible for it. But we are thankful to the government for everything,” Kashmir’s son Shishpal Singh says.
Kashmir’s relatives and friends plan to give him a hero's welcome.
