Farmers of Karaikal are sore with the government as their wait for the Central Water Commission (CEC) team’s visit was futile. Farmers in the area are faced with an acute water shortage severely affecting standing paddy crops.
There is no intimation regarding the visit by the Central team to Karaikal which is assessing the situation in Tamil Nadu.
Already Kuruvai crop has been lost due to insufficient monsoon. Now, hoping Cauvery water would be available, farmers have sown crops in only 671 hectares of land, of around 6,000 hectares of land on which paddy crops are cultivated. But, even these crops are under threat as Cauvery water is still not available in the region, which is at the tail end of the delta, said P Rajendran.
Water was received only on one day; after the channels were dry, he said. The farmers blame the Puducherry government for the lethargy in not taking up the issue with the Centre. The association wants the government to take steps to declare the area as drought hit and secure a compensation for the affected farmers, said Rajendran.
