Valencia: Shiv Kapur shot a modest 71 to be placed tied 59th after the opening round of the Castello Masters on the European Tour on Thursday.
Kapur, the only Indian playing in the tournament and needs a couple of good finishes to seal his European Tour card for 2012, shot two birdies and three bogeys, all on the back nine between the 12th and 17th holes.
He parred his first 11 holes.
Kapur is 117th on the Money List, from where the top-115 get to keep their card.
Meanwhile, England's Ross McGowan, who at 163rd is way behind in the Race to Dubai list, the other name for European Tour's Money List, leads the field with a seven-under 64.
McGowan is two ahead of fellow Englishman Richard McEvoy and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti, who in turn are three shots clear of a group including Sergio Garcia on his home course and Northern Irishman Michael Hoey, winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship title.
Garcia is without a win for almost three years.
The 18 year old defending champion Matteo Manassero shot a 69 after kicking off with four successive birdies, while 20-year-old Tom Lewis, winner of the Portugal Masters in only his third professional start last week shot 71.
