A 16-year-old juvenile has been apprehended for making hoax calls to the Delhi airport. The juvenile, who was nabbed from Noida, made the hoax calls just for fun after getting the Air India call centre number from a calendar that his father had purchased.
On May 18, Delhi Police received an information that bomb has been planted in the flight scheduled from Delhi airport at 4am on May 19. The caller didn't reveal the flight number.
According to the information, a security drill was initiated and meeting with Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) was conducted. During the investigation it was found that the call was made at a Bombay based call centre of Air India at around 6.20 pm on May 18.
After the investigation, a general alert was declared and the call was found be hoax.
Delhi Police, meanwhile, registered an FIR under sections 505-b IPC and 3(1) (d) - the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Civil Aviation Act.
"With the help of technical surveillance and raids in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, a juvenile has been apprehended. He was found involved in the crime. We have recovered the mobile phone and SIM," said DCP IGI Airport DK Gupta.
The juvenile was interrogated jointly by the Delhi Police' Special Cell and other security agencies. During the investigation, it was found that the juvenile made the hoax call for fun and to create panic and there is no terrorist threat.
On questioning further, he revealed that his father had purchased a 2016 calendar which had toll free number of different device agencies printed on it. He got the Air India number from the calendar and made the hoax call.
The punishment under the suppression of unlawful act against the safety of civil aviation is life imprisonment. It's up to the juvenile board to decide the punishment term.
"Since last many days IGI airport is facing traumatic situation due to such calls. Apprehension of such hoax caller and punishment of life imprisonment shall definitely discourage the hoax callers," said DCP Gupta.
