CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday lifted the 20 per cent power cut imposed on High Tension (HT) industries and commercial establishments between 10 pm and 5 am, using the 100 mw of power generated by windmills that goes unused during the months of August and September. The move will ensure that the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) earns Rs 10 crore as consumer charges, while the windmills can benefit from selling the power generated by them, the Chief Minister told the State Assembly in a suo motu statement.High Tension industries and commercial establishments have been facing 90 per cent power cut during their peak hours between 6 pm and 10 pm.During the night, from August 9, 2010, only 10 per cent of power had been supplied to them for security and lighting arrangements. These power restrictions are in force even now. At present, the power generated through wind mills stands at 6,007 MW and the generation was not uniform throughout the year. During the months of August and September, when the wind blow was high, power generation through windmills goes up and during the rest of the period, it would be less.Significantly, the power generated through windmills would be high only during night times and again, the power thus generated could not be used.As a result of this, the owners of windmills could not sell the power generated and on the other hand, the power generated could not be saved, the Chief Minister said and added that it would be wise to distribute the extra power generated to those who are in need. The CM also said that her government had evolved a plan for utilising the surplus power generated through wind mills during the months of August and September. Between 10 pm and 5 am, the 20 per cent power cut in force now would be completely lifted with immediate effect.
