ALAPPUZHA: Defence Minister A K Antony inaugurated the Rs 491-crore Japan Drinking Water Project at Cherthala, near here, on Tuesday. Antony said that political parties in the state should follow the parties in Tamil Nadu, Bengal and northern states on developmental issues. They often fight with each other on political issues, but their stance on developmental issues will be unanimous. In our state, over-politicisation has been delaying many projects for decades. The Japan Drinking Water Project was delayed a decade owing to controversies, Antony said.Chief Minister Oommen Chandy presided over the function. He said that the government has been formulating a project to ease the drinking water shortage in the Kuttanad region. He said that `60 crore has been sanctioned to lay more distribution lines in Cherthala taluk. Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan, Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal, Water Resources Minister P J Joseph, MLAs T M Thomas Isaac, P Thilothaman and A M Arif, former Water Resources Minister N K Prem achandran, Kerala Water Authority MD Ashok Kumar Singh, Water Resources Principal Secretary V J Kurian and District Collector Sourabh Jain spoke.
