Jamia shootout: Landlord had no clue about tenants
Owner of the house did not verify the antecedents of the tenants.

Ghaziabad: The owner of the Jamia Nagar house, where two supected terrorists were killed in a shootout with the Delhi Police on Friday, says he didn't have a clue about the antecedents of his tenants.

“I had no idea about who was residing in my house. I had never met them,” Mohsin Nisar, an executive engineer with the Public Works Department (PWD) in this Delhi suburb, said.

Nisar had reportedly purchased the three-bedroom house from Idrish Mian, a PWD contractor in New Delhi, about six months ago for Rs 3,00,000 and rented it out to a lecturer and two students without verifying their antecedents.

“My steno Rehman then approached me saying that he would take care of my house and maintain it. Since I trust him very much, I had given the house keys to him for maintenance,” he said.

“About one-and-a-half month ago, he told me that I should rent out the house and that it would fetch me a cool Rs.7,000 a month. Based on his assurance, I did so and it was rented to a lecturer and to students of the nearby Jamia university,” said the landlord, who lives in the Raj Nagar area of Ghaziabad.

Rehman then approached the local police station and submitted an application for tenant verification but police apparently did not do so, Nisar said.

"I was surprised to hear this morning that an encounter (shoot out) had taken place in my house."

Asked if he had any idea he was renting his house to suspected militants, Nisar said: “I had no clue about who they were. Rehman was looking after the house."

Queried why he did not ever meet those living in his house, he said: “It was only one and a half months. I was told they were students, so I did not object. Maybe I would have met them after some time."
