KOCHI: The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church has urged the State Government to assign an independent agency to investigate into the attack on a police officer during a clash between the Jacobite and Orthodox factions at Kanyattunirapu St Mary’s Church, near Puthencruz, last Sunday. Puthencruz CI Biju K Stephen was seriously injured when he was allegedly beaten up with an iron rod. Two civil police officers also suffered injuries in the incident.Addressing a press conference in Kochi on Thursday, Catholicos Baselios Thomas I, head of the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church, lashed out at the police. He alleged that police authorities in Ernakulam district were targeting the Jacobite faction and fake cases were being registered against the followers.“The propaganda that a police officer was attacked by Jacobites is nothing but an attempt to conceal police atrocities. The police officer would have fallen and suffered injuries in the clash. He was not attacked by Jacobites,” the Catholicos said. “The Orthodox faction has joined hands with miscreants to create unrest in the parishes where the Jacobite faction has a majority. The government should take the initiative to conduct a referendum on the dispute over the Kolenchery church. The Orthodox faction is opposing a referendum as they are aware that the the result of such a referendum will be against them,” the Catholicos alleged.
