THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A seminar on Chemistry was held at Christ Nagar International School, Kowdiar, the other day as part of the International Chemistry Year-2011 celebrations. Dr George Thomas, a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize in Chemical Sciences in 2006, was one of the speakers of the day. Dr Dinesh Babu, Associate Professor, Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, Dr Saji Alex, Assistant Professor, Government College for Women and Dr Shibi, Associate Professor, Sree Narayana College, Kollam, were the other speakers. Dr George Thomas touched on the milestone inventions of the 19th and 20th centuries in the field of Chemistry. It was followed by a session led by Dr Dinesh Babu on the topic ‘Retro-synthetic analysis and Combinatorial Chemistry’. Dr Saji Alex, who led a session on the topic ‘Chemistry in classroom’, presented the magical world of chemical reactions with illustrative videos. Dr Shibi conducted a session on the topic ‘Genesis and relevance of Green Chemistry’. Science teachers from 20 schools in and around the city were present. Christ Nagar International School also conducted an inter-school paper presentation competition on the topic, ‘Pros and cons of nuclear fuels; safety measures to protect humanity from disasters.’
