KOCHI: “Intelligent speed control while driving will go a long way in averting accidents,” Motor Vehicle Inspector Shaji Madhavan of the Mattancherry Sub-Regional Transport Office has said.Explaining the focus of the one-day workshop on Road Safety conducted at Mattancherry the other day, Shaji Madhavan said that defensive driving would give protection to the driver himself/herself, the pedestrians and other drivers on the road. For safe driving, the driver himself/herself should remain within a safe circle by keeping proper distance from other vehicles and pedestrians. Frequent and unwanted honking should be avoided by a driver, he said.Referring to the two-wheeler accidents in 2010, he said that 74 percent of the accidents had been caused by head injuries. Using of helmets would have averted fatalities in these accidents. A seat belt would give total protection to the driver only if the speed is below 70 kmph, he said. All efforts should focus on developing a safe traffic culture which is yet to take a proper shape in the country, he said. The workshop was organised by the Mattancherry Sub-Regional Transport Office for the instructors of the driving schools in the light of the study report of the World Health Organisation that the road accidents rate and the fatality rates in the accidents were very high across the country, especially in Kerala. “The instructors of the driving schools play a key role in grooming good drivers. Hence the workshop has been organised with the aim of guiding the instructors on the need for a structured curriculum and proper directives,” said former RTO C T Michael who led the workshop. Driving instructors from various driving schools, including A2Z Driving School, Pradeep Driving School, Benoy Driving School, Dhanya Driving School, St Jude Driving School and Hi-Care Driving School, participated in the workshop. Joint RTO Jojy P Jose inaugurated the workshop. Milan and Balu were among those who spoke. Shaji Madhavan said that similar workshops would be conducted in the coming months also as the campaign for road safety was a continuing process. Workshops are being planned for primary, secondary and higher secondary school students in the coming days to groom a generation of good drivers, he said.
