A lean lady in white dress and with a calm and cold face. Very polite when seeing or talking to others. Nobody without a second look would realise that it was Sobha John, the first woman in Kerala to be included in the goonda list.
Sobha John, who had several times made news for her alleged role in murder, blackmailing and association with sex rackets, was as silent and attentive as any other inmate who was present as audience at the inaugural function of the FM radio system at the Women’s Jail, Attakulangara, here.
Sobha John, also an accused in the Varapuzha sex scandal, was housed in the jail after being convicted in the Thantri blackmailing case on August 8.
As soon as the function ended, when ADGP Prisons Alexander Jacob and Women’s Commission Chairperson K C Rosakutty came down from the dais, Sobha John greeted them with utmost politeness.
The FM radio system was launched at the jail along with the public address system. Both the facilities were installed at a cost of Rs 3,47,256. By the launching of the public address system, the hours-long waiting for the visitors to see the inmates would be over.
With the new facility, once a visitor arrives, it would be announced through the system so that the inmate whom the visitor intends to meet can be intimated easily. Also, the common announcements for the inmates would also be made through the new system.
Earlier, Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan inaugurated the systems. “It is a welcome fact that the number of women inmates is declining. This is a sign of a civilised society. The prisoners should view their life in jail as a period for transition so that when they are released they can set an example for the society outside,” said the Home Minister in his inaugural speech.
Mayor K Chandrika presided over the function. K C Rosakutty, Alexander Jacob and councillor P S Nair were among those who spoke.
