Indrani Mukerjea Overdosed on Anti-depressant Drug Benzodiazepine, Finds Test

Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea, prime accused in the Sheena Murder case, has overdosed on anti-depressants, reveals the chemical analysis report by Hinduja Hospital.

The report which was submitted to the JJ Hospital on Monday evening states that the level of Benzodiazepine, a class of anti-depressants that she has been taking for more than two years was significantly high in her blood stream.

The hospital is awaiting the chemical analysis report from Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Kalina as well.

Mukerjea was brought to the JJ Hospital around 11.15 pm on Friday from the Byculla Jail in south Mumbai in a "semi-conscious" state and was admitted to the Critical Care Unit.

Sudhir Nanandkar, dean of JJ Hospital, told CNN-News18, “Since she was in a disoriented state when she was admitted and had arrived with contracted pupils, we had suspected drug overdose at the preliminary stage itself. How this was administered and whether there was any negligence on part of prison authorities is for the police to find out. We had sent blood and urine samples to both Hinduja and FSL.”

In October 2015, she was admitted in JJ hospital on an overdose of the same drug as per the report by Hinduja Hospital back then.

The Inspector General of Police (Prisons) Rajvardhan Sinha, meanwhile, has initiated an inquiry into the incident. “We will be questioning jail staff and escort staff who escorted Indrani from Byculla jail to court and back on Friday. The entire gamut of activities that happened on Friday will be probed,” he said.

He said that it is too early to confirm there was any foul play or negligence on the part of prison staff. He added that as per prison diary, her usual dose of medicines which include vitamin tablets in the morning and an anti-depressant, tablets for BP and hypertension in the evening were administered to her as per the prescribed limit in the presence of jail staff and jail doctors.

As per prison officials, Mukerjea had also told other jail inmates that she had consumed food from outside on Friday.

Sinha and a few jail officials had visited Indrani on Monday afternoon. “We visited the hospital. Her condition has improved but she is not able to talk properly since she is under medication. Her detailed statement recording will happen soon,” he added.

Mukerjea was brought to JJ hospital in a disoriented state. She was shifted from emergency to critical care unit. She was in a semi-conscious state for a day and her condition improved on Sunday. Pneumonia tests showed positive and MRI scan had revealed ischaemic changes in her brains.
