In Karnataka's Chikkamagaluru, Ban On Heavy Vehicles From July 5
There are reports of continuous rain in July in Chikkamagaluru. Authorities that due to excessive rainfall, there is a possibility that the hills, roads, bridges and drains could collapse.

The state highways and the district’s major roads are under the ambit of the Chikkamagaluru’s Public Works Department. According to the Deputy Commissioner, there are reports of continuous rain in July in Chikkamagaluru. The DC added that due to excessive rainfall, there is a possibility that the hill, roads, culverts, bridges and drains could collapse due to enormous moisture due to heavy lorries. The officer assured that the administration is making appropriate provisions for the smooth movement of public transportation and the prevention of accidents.

The Commissioner also cautioned that the movement of heavy vehicles could cause landslides during heavy rains. As per the officer, the localities that are in danger of landslides include Sri Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swamy Dargah, Seethalayyanagiri, Mullayyanagiri, Manikyadhara and Galikere. Besides these localities, surrounding hill stations have also been receiving heavy rains, and wind speed is also high. According to the DC, the movement of heavy vehicles in such a situation could cause severe damage, leading to the loss of lives.

In a similar instance, Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade issued an order prohibiting a vehicular traffic ban (movement of heavy goods vehicles) on Agumbe Ghat on Thirthahalli-Malpe Road (National Highway 169A). As per the Local 18 Kannda, the officer has taken this step, keeping in mind the danger of landslides which are exacerbated by the heavy rains. The ban will remain in effect from June 27 to September 15. The order was issued under section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Section 221(a)(2) of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Act, 1989. Only light vehicles will be permitted on the Thirthahalli – Malpe Road of NH 169A at Agumbe Ghat.

The heavy vehicles entering from Thirthahalli to Udupi, Karnataka are ordered to change the routes via the Thirthahalli-Mastikatte-Siddapura-Kundapura road. On the other hand, heavy vehicles moving from Udupi to Thirthahalli should divert towards the Udupi-Kundapura-Siddapura-Mastikatte route.
