Goa Congress says it will enact a new law to prevent foreigners from buying land in the state.

New Delhi: After a CNN-IBN Special Investigation exposed how Russian land mafia in Goa are colluding with the state government and looting the state of its prime estate, reactions have been pouring in from politicians and activists in Goa.

They have asked for solutions to the land scam exposed by CNN-IBN.

“Indian Registration Act has to be amended to see the foreigners who buy chunks of land in Goa are not able to do so just like any other Indian citizen. There must be strict vigilance on conversions. If conversions do not take place so ramapantly, then foreigners won’t be able to buy land,” says Congress Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik.

Agrees Convenor of Goa Bachao Abhiyan Oscar Rebello, “It’s extremely important for the government that comes in to formulate a Regional Plan and a land use policy for the benefit of Goans.”

CNN-IBN exposed former Goa Minister Babush Monserrate operating as a middleman in fraudulent land deals across the state.

After the investigation was aired, Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane went on record telling the state Assembly that foreign companies have indeed been buying land across Goa through fraudulent means.

Rane also said RBI and the Enforcement Directorate were investigating as many as 482 properties illegally purchased by foreigners in the state

"Many of these deals violate the Foreign Exchange Management Act," Rane had stated. "And nearly 12-lakh-square metres of agricultural and prime coastal land in Goa is now in the illegal possession of foreigners on tourist visas," he said.
