West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said that if the state police fails to solve the murder and rape case of the trainee doctor by Sunday, August 18, the government will transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“I want the police to arrest the accused as soon as possible. However, if the police are unable to solve this case by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI,” Banerjee stated after meeting the victim’s family at her home in Kolkata.

Banerjee on Friday stated that her government will seek the death penalty for the accused and directed officials to ensure the case is tried in a fast-track court.

The 31-year-old postgraduate trainee’s semi-nude body was discovered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday.

The victim, a second-year student in the chest medicine department, had been on duty the previous night. Her body showed signs of injury, and the preliminary autopsy report indicated that she had been sexually assaulted before being killed.

Doctors and medical students staged a massive protest across the country on Monday in response to the brutal sexual assault and murder of a trainee doctor. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Associations (FORDA) has called for a nationwide medical strike in reaction to the incident.

Sandip Ghosh, principal at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, have also resigned from his post and government service earlier today, following demands from junior doctors for his removal due to his failure to ensure staff security.

So far, the Kolkata police have arrested Sanjay Roy in connection with the case. Roy, an outsider had access to several departments of the hospital due to his role as a civic volunteer in the police welfare board. He was apprehended after his activities raised suspicions.
