TIRUNRLVELI: Condemning Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Russia to sign a deal with his Russian counterpart to set up more nuclear power reactors at the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project, members of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), which is leading the stir in Tirunelveli district, began a 72-hour hunger protest strike at Idinthakarai on Friday. Black flags were hoisted in houses and on boats, while shops downed shutters in the area. Fishing activity was suspended in coastal villages including Perumanal, Idinthakarai, Panchal, and Kuttapuli in Tirunelveli district and in some villages in Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts. About 150 people participated in the 3-day strike, which was led by PMANE coordinator SP Udayakumar. It will conclude on Sunday. Udayakumar told Express that it appeared that the Centre was acting against the people and government of TN.
