New Delhi: Lok Sabha was adjourned on Thursday over a rail ticket. It started when BJD member B K Tripathi began reading out what he called an official circular of the Railway Board.
According to him, the circular said the names of all stations on the railway ticket needed to be written only in Hindi and English and exception was allowed only in case of Tamil Nadu where Tamil will be the third language.
Arguing it was unfair, Tripathi said the third language policy should be extended to the rest of the country as well.
But was a commotion really necessary? “This is what a democracy is all about,” says Union Science and Techlogoy Kapil Sibal
Though the adjournment of the Lok Sabha was a waste of time, language on railway ticket actually turned out to be an issue passengers felt strongly about.
“I think they should print information in Orriya”, “Tickets should have info in Punjabi”, “Railway tickets should be printed in Marathi”, were some of the responses from the passengers at the New Delhi railway station.
That doesn't come as a surprise considering that there are 21 other official languages apart from English and Hindi that are recognised by our constitution. And all of them are vying to get printed on this ticket.
