PURI: The Assembly Petition Committee on Thursday directed the Puri Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) to lodge an FIR against owner of a private nursing home who operated upon a pregnant woman resulting in her death. While the person is not a qualified doctor, the nursing home too was found to be an illegal one with no registration. Sources said Shantilata Sethy (42) of Malud village under Krushna Prasad block was admitted to Manorama nursing home here on June 23 with a complaint of pain in her lower abdomen. Prasanta Nanda Jena, owner of the nursing home, said that she was suffering from pain because of pregnancy and advised her to terminate it. Later, he operated upon her but the patient’s condition became critical and bleeding could not be checked. She was referred to MKCG Medical, Berhampur, where she succumbed on June 25. Following the death, her relatives gheraoed Jena and he agreed to pay ` 1.5 lakh to the kin of the deceased as compensation. The matter came to the notice of Chhatrapur MLA Adikanda Sethy who informed the Health and Family Welfare Department and the Chairman of the petition committee.As directed by the Government, CDMO N H Maharana inquired into the incident and reported that the nursing home was operating without any registration and had no infrastructure, not to speak of qualified medicos. On Thursday morning, members of the Petition Committee visited Puri and asked the District Magistrate to seal the illegal nursing home at the earliest besides initiating criminal case against the owner.
