New Delhi: India's hopes of a Hopman Cup title on debut were kept alive when a spirited Sania Mirza defeated Sanja Ancic of Croatia to take a 1-0 lead in the Group B encounter in the mixed team competition at Perth on Wednesday.
Sania beat her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the women's singles match to give India the cushion leading into the men's and mixed doubles encounters.
Rohan Bopanna, Sania's partner in the event is scheduled to play leading Croat Mario Ancic, Sanja's brother in the men's event later on Wednesday.
