THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The latest edition of the Limca Book of Records-2011 will have a special slot reserved for a man from Neyyar Dam and for a social service centre set up by him. Limca Book of Records has recognised Wilson Kochukunju, the director of BGM Social Service Centre, Neyyar Dam, for his unique social endeavours. The citation honours him for the effort he has taken in raising the money for constructing wells for the poor and the needy who were struggling for potable water in the hot summers. BGM Social Service Centre has spent Rs 18,24,000 towards this end, each well costing Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000. Wilson, who took to social service owing to a personal incident that happened in his childhood, has also constructed 186 latrines and over 50 rainwater reservoirs for the poor people in his locality. ‘’As a child, I had once gone for an uninvited wedding just to get a taste of good food. However, the house owner mercilessly pushed my friends and me outside. We then ate from the waste heap. It was an unforgettable incident in my life which later spurred me to do something for the starving people,’’ said Wilson. It was in 1996 that Wilson set up BGM Social Service Centre at Neyyar Dam to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and the needy. The centre also works to improve sanitary conditions of the poor section of the society residing at Veeranakavu and Kallikadu viillages near Amboori. Later, 23 tuition centres were also introduced  to impart free education to the students who could not afford private classes. Besides, he has been actively involved in the functioning of ‘ayalkoottams’, encouraging the local people to acquire vocational training in the making of carry bags and greeting cards.
