Intense rainfall has led to significant disruptions across Karnataka, with several major roadways becoming impossible to travel. The Chandika River in Yanada, a tributary of the Aghanashini, is overflowing, causing the Katgala route to flood and leading to the closure of National Highway 766E between Kumata and Sirsi. This has severely hindered travel between the hill country and the coast, leaving many travellers stranded and unable to return to their hometowns.
Additionally, landslides have worsened the situation. One such incident on the Honnavara-Sagara route and another sudden landslide in Varnakeri village completely blocked the Karwar-Shivamogga-Bengaluru route. The Gundabala River is also on the brink of overflowing, raising the potential for floods. Consequently, authorities are advising against travel to Malenadu and the plains via Kumata, Honnavara and Bhatkal.
Travel on the coastal route is advised to be postponed for a few days, particularly on the Ankola-Shirsi route, where the river near Dongri in Ankola is flowing above dangerous levels. Moreover, the Kumta-Shirasi, Honnavara-Sagar and Ankola-Shirasi routes remain closed due to the adverse weather conditions.
The region is also experiencing network issues, which is a common problem in the densely forested Western Ghat area. Motorists are encouraged to either delay or cut short their journeys considering these challenges.
Besides, the Malnad region continued to experience heavy showers on Wednesday. With the rise in water levels of several rivers including Tunga, Bhadra, Sharavathi and Aghanashini, the dams are receiving good inflows.
Shivamogga district received an average of 196 mm of rainfall on Wednesday. Tunga and Bhadra reservoirs recorded a sharp rise in inflows in the last 24 hours as their catchment areas in Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts received ample rains.
