Govt to review sugar import ban
Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath says situation will reviewed in “a month or two”.

New Delhi: The Government will in “one or two months” consider whether the ban on exporting sugar must be lifted, said Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath on Wednesday.

"The ban has been lifted for orders against advanced licences. We will review the situation in a month or two to decide on whether to lift the ban entirely," Nath said.

The Centre on Monday permitted traders who had imported raw sugar and had advance licences to export it. It has projected the sugar output to be at least 227 lakh tonnes, while the industry has pegged it at 230 lakh tonnes during the 2006-07 sugar season starting October this year.

The domestic consumption of sugar is pegged at 190 lakh tonnes and with opening stock of about 40 lakh tonnes, this would leave surplus to 77-80 lakh tonnes during the season.

Sugar exports were banned in July after prices of essential items, particularly wheat, pulses and the sweetener rose alarmingly.
