VELLORE: The Handloom Mark scheme introduced by Department of Textiles, Government of India has received a good response from weavers and garment producers in Tamil Nadu, according to M Vasanthakumar, Assistant director of the Textile Marketing Committee, Chennai who inaugurated a seminar on Textiles under the aegis of the Department of Textiles at Timiri near Arcot on Tuesday.He said handloom sector was providing jobs both directly and indirectly to over 65 lakh workers across the country and awareness about  handloom products had increased in Tamil Nadu. He noted that around Rs 500 crore worth handloom materials were being exported from India every year. The scheme was introduced in 2006 to provide a safety cover to the sector. The handloom mark label affixed on the products had added value to the products and more number of youngsters were opting for handloom wears now, he noted. Under this scheme, 8,613 handloom weavers and garment producers have been enrolled in the country of which around 6,000 were from Tamil Nadu. Around 2.32 crore labels have been sold so far under the scheme of which the TN share was 1.2 crores, he added. Vasanthakumar urged handloom weavers to come up with innovative designs to increase their share in the domestic and international markets.  A Jamal Mohamed, assistant director of the Vellore district unit of the Textile department suggested several measures to the weavers and their wards for their welfare.
