Panaji: Six labourers are feared killed after they were trapped in a landslide in the pit of an iron ore mine at Ugem Tollem area in Sanguem town of South Goa on Saturday.
Police has recovered the body of one of the workers so far.
Efforts are on to rescue the others even as the authorities sought the assistance of the military for the rescue operation, Quepem subdivisional police officer Jayaprakash Nagvender said.
The tragedy took place as one of the open cast mines belonging to Tata Timlo company caved in on Saturday afternoon.
The toll could have been more had the mishap occurred before the lunch hour, he said.
Authorities said the landmass at a height of 150 to 200 metres above the mine caved in when two Volvo dumper trucks and three Itachi machines were working inside.
Fire tenders also rushed to the spot for rescue mission. Further details are awaited.
