THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Malayalam Aikya Vedi has urged the State Government to urgently implement its own order making Malayalam the mandatory first language in schools. To facilitate this, the Vedi has called for the immediate creation of new posts and additional periods at the higher secondary and vocational higher secondary levels. The demands were raised by Malayalam Aikya Vedi general secretary K K Subair at a news conference held here the other day. The Government Order making Malayalam the mandatory first language in schools was issued on May 6, 2011. He said that another order issued on June 27 this year had removed an extra hour allotted for teaching Malayalam in schools. As per the new directive, Malayalam could be taught in schools only before the commencement of classes in the morning, during the afternoon interval time or after the classes are over. This, according to Subair, is practically impossible. He also charged that the government had not taken any initiative to introduce a primary text in Malayalam up to tenth standard in CBSE and ICSE schools. Subair criticised the decision of the Education Department to do away with the space in the SSLC certificate where the name of the candidate is written in Malayalam. Subair insisted that this space be restored at the earliest. The proposed Malayalam University must teach various subjects using Malayalam as a medium of instruction, Subair said. Dr P Pavithran, secretary, South Zone, and D Yesudas, Convener, Thiruvananthapuram, were also present.
