New Delhi: Massive political pressure by the rebel gorkhas has finally forced the caretaker administrator of the Darjeeling Hill Council and Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) Chief Subhash Ghising to agree to step down, a month before his term ended.
Ghising has sought 10 days time from the West Bengal government to step down from the post, which he has been holding for last 20 years, chief of agitating Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) said on Friday.
Ghising had ruled the hills with an iron fist for 20 years. Leaders of the GJM, which broke away from the Ghising-led Gorkha National Liberation Front, built the pressure for Ghising to quit.
Earlier, the GJM leaders met Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for the second time in 48 hours seeking Ghising's removal. The GJM's long-standing demand that the proposed tribal status for people of the hill under the Constitution's Sixth Schedule not be implemented has also been met.
"We have won because as far as the Sixth Schedule is concerned, the Parliamentary standing committee is going to forward it to the Bengal government and wouldn't be implemented without our consent. It's now as good as being thrown to the dustbin," GJM President Bimal Gurung said.
