Gandhians from across the state participated in a one-day token fast in Palayamkottai, urging the implementation of prohibition.
South India Gandhian Grama Nirman Seva Thal and Tamil Nadu Gandhian People jointly organised the token fast at Jawahar Grounds, in Palayamkottai on Sunday. Gandhi Peravai president Kumari Ananthan led the protest.
K M Nadarajan, president, Tamil Nadu Sarvodaya Mandal, Madurai, started off the protest. Speaking at the fast, Kumari Ananthan said that the ills of liquor was written about in Thirukkural, Silapathikaram and Kambaramayanan.
Mahatma Gandhi had said that liquor was bad next to untouchability. But now, liquor is being sold at Congress-ruled states. Former chief minister Kamarajar was first arrested when he picketed against toddy shops. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister should come forward to implement prohibition. We were ready to support it, Kumari added.
Kumari also noted that initiatives were being taken to stage nation-wide protests to eradicate liquor.
Gandhian Grama Nirman Seval Thal president V Vivekanandan, former Gandhigram University vice-chancellor N Markandan, Nellai Kannan and others participated.
The Gandhians distributed tender coconuts, butter milk and lemon juice to persons going to a nearby TASMAC shops.
