New Delhi: Among all the films releasing on October 14, Nagesh Kukunoor's 'Mod' seems to be leading the race. The directors of 'Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge', 'My Friend Pinto' and 'Jo Dooba So Paar' are the debutants while the director of 'Aazaan' is a second timer. Moreover, Prashant Chadha, who had earlier directed 'Aap Kaa Surroor' before 'Aazaan', is not an acclaimed director, thus the whole focus shifts to Nagesh Kukunoor. The common mass expects another good show from Kukunoor after 'Hyderabad Blues', 'Rockford', 'Iqbal' and 'Dor.
Nagesh is again going with his favourite heroine Ayesha Takia in 'Mod' while the responsibility of playing the hero will be shouldered by the video jockey turned actor Rannvijay Singh Singha.
Rannvijay, better known for his straight forward remarks and tough biker image, is for the first time putting his abilities under scanner as the solo hero.
The fame generated via 'Roadies' brought him on the panel of judges on the same show, from where he leaped into the world of advertisements.
A small stint in TV commercials produced the first break in films for Rannvijay but the fate was not on his side. His debut film 'Toss' bombed drastically at the box office. Rannvijay was still fortunate to sign his next film otherwise his co-star Prashant Raj, who was launched with great enthusiasm in 'Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag', finished after the double blow of 'Toss' and 'Aag'.
Rannvijay always gives hints in interviews that his feet are grounded well and he proved exactly that by accepting the offer to play a small role in the film 'London Dreams'. His character Wasim Hayyat Khan was not very significant for the film but still he did the role. He was not an unknown face till then but the ambitious actor inside Rannvijay was craving for any chance, howsoever small be it, to make his presence felt. Rannvijay's efforts did prove capable enough to fetch attention towards him to some extent.
'Action Replayy' and 'Mumbai Cutting' came in the year 2010 but they too did not improve the market scenario for Ranvijay. Nobody cared about 'Mumbai Cutting' and two superstars Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai completely stole the show in 'Action Replayy'.
Punjabi film 'Dharti' featured Rannvijay in a meaty role and the film became successful in Punjabi speaking areas. Though Jimmy Sheirgill was the protagonist and the story revolved around him only but Rannvijay also got noticed.
Finally, Rannvijay has been given the chance to prove his talent in a film that seems to be based on performance.
The television advertisements of 'Mod' do not show any exotic foreign locations or stylish wardrobes thus the only thing which can captivate the audiences will be the individual acting skills of the lead pair.
'Mod' is Rannvijay's chance to get ahead in the game. If the film becomes successful then he will get some more lead roles for sure, otherwise he will have to go back to playing side characters for some more time.
