Farmer suicides mar TRS' short tenure in Telangana, opposition blames indifference
Non-implementation of loan waivers, power cuts, inadequate rainfall, dry bore wells have caused crops to fail in the state and forced farmers to end their lives.

Hyderabad: It is a grim situation for farmers across Telangana. In the last five months, since the Telangana Rashtra Samiti came to power in the state - around 350 farmers have committed suicide. Non-implementation of loan waivers, power cuts, inadequate rainfall, dry bore wells, depletion of ground water and poor irrigation facilities have caused crops to fail in the state and forced farmers to end their lives.

The opposition recently walked out of the state assembly over increasing farmer suicides in the state. The Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party and Telugu Desam Party have slammed the government for failing to provide any relief to farmers.

Telangana Congress working president, Uttam Kumar Reddy reacted to the appalling situation by saying, "the figures are shameful for the government, farmer suicide is a serious issue and the government has failed".

Another BJP MLA K Laxman also reacted similarly,"Government has not come to the rescue of farmers." He claimed that there was no direction in the budget, and the walk out of the opposition parties was a move to drive home the gravity of the situation and force the government to take concrete steps.

In the state budget, the TRS government has allocated several crores to the agriculture sector.

4250 crore was allocated for the farmer debt waiver scheme. The scheme waives loans upto Rs 1 lakh per family.

50 crore has been allocated to make Telangana the seed bank of the nation.

100 crore for farm mechanisation.

2000 crore for the restoration of irrigation tanks and 450 crore for input subsidy dues to the farming community.

TRS MLA Guvvala Balaraju said, "We are proud of the budget, we have addressed farmers issues whereas the previous government has left the state in a bad shape.

While the TRS blames the previous government for the suicides - Telangana's farmers are simply demanding some compassion from the state government.

What's your reaction?
