London: Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen underlined Ferrari's impressive pre-season form by setting a blistering pace in testing at Bahrain's Sakhir circuit on Tuesday.

Ferrari said the Finn, who performed a full race simulation at the desert track including three qualifying sections and pit stops, ended the day with a fastest lap of one minute 30.595 seconds.

That was more than two seconds faster than last year's Bahrain Grand Prix pole position time of 1:32.652, set by Ferrari's Felipe Massa, and also well inside Lewis Hamilton's best 2007 practice lap of 1:32.543 for McLaren.

Ferrari are in Bahrain with Toyota after skipping last weekend's test in Barcelona that most of the other teams took part in.

Toyota said both of their new TF108 cars suffered gearbox problems in the afternoon.

"It hasn't been the easiest day but we have done some good work. The potential in the new car is clear and we now understand more about how different set-up changes affect its performance," said Germany's Timo Glock.

The season starts in Australia on March 16.
