CHENNAI: Engineering aspirants residing around Chennai thronged Anna University where the issue of applications for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions 2012 was launched on Friday. For Arun it was unlike his usual morning, which begins with cricket that goes on until sun reaches the horizon.“My teachers told me that there would be a mad rush for the engineering applications. So I told my friends that I wouldn’t be joining them for our regular game as I had to get ready early in the morning to get my application before the crowd,” he said.Arun, a resident of Thiruporur, opted for Anna University over Madras Institute of Technology, Chrompet where, too, applications were being distributed.Arun reached the Anna University campus by 6 am to find parents and students already waiting in queues.“Fortunately, the queue moved at a brisk pace and I got the application within a few minutes,” he added. The crowd started swelling from 9.30 am onwards. The distribution of applications was formally launched by Anna University Vice-Chancellor P Mannar Jawahar. At Anna University there were 20 application counters and applications were being issued against either cash or a demand draft for the stipulated amount. Mannar Jawahar told the media that the counters would be open between 9.30 am and 5.30 pm on all working days.“We opened the counter early today to tone down the initial rush. We have made arrangements to ensure that no student in the queue will have to wait more than five minutes to get the application,” he said. He noted that special arrangements had been made for the differently abled who came to buy applications. “Applications are also being issued at Purashiwak Government Polytechnic and Bharathi’s Women’s College,” he said.
