New Delhi: Hours before President A P J Abdul Kalam signed a bill to exempt some posts from the definition of office of profit, the Election Commission (EC) on Friday sent a notice to the petitioner against Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and some other CPI-M MPs in the disqualification case.
EC sources said the decision to send the notice to Trinamool Congress activist Mukul Roy was taken by the Commission on Thursday and it was sent this morning before EC was aware of the Presidential assent.
Meanwhile, sources say that now that the President has given assent to the Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment Bill, 2006, the Commission would look into what were the posts that would now get exempt from the definition of office of profit and continue with the proceedings in cases which are not exempt.
