The WHO has declined to disclose the doctor's identity, but noted the doctor is currently in stable condition in Sierra Leone's capital city of Freetown, Xinhua reported.

The Ebola treatment centre where the doctor was working is located in the country's south-eastern Kenema government hospital, which is run by the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health and Sanitation.

WHO's initial role in the facility was to offer guidance on setting up an Ebola treatment centre, and to provide mentorship and direction to national staff until they could manage the facilities with local capacity.

According to WHO's latest report, the total number of Ebola cases now stood at 3,944 and deaths at 2,079 in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, countries identified as "those with widespread and intense transmission".
