A duo allegedly attacked a car driver and escaped with silver articles worth nearly Rs 6 lakh — belonging to a Chennai-based duo — that were kept inside the vehicle, near here on Saturday.
A duo from Chennai, Akshaya (27) of NSC Bose Street and his friend Madan (38) of Chintadripet, came to Madurai in a hired car on July 19 to participate in a jewellery show, police said.
They brought with with them silver articles weighing around 75 kg. As they could not get enough space to exhibit their entire collection, they kept about 11 kg of silver in the car.
When Akshaya went to have dinner, the car driver, Kamalakannan, a resident of Perambur, Chennai, told him that he would be going out to get the car tyres checked.
He then took the car with the silver articles to Kulamangalam Road.
However, after several hours passed and Kamalakannan did not return, police were informed. They traced him to the Government Rajaji Hospital, where he was reportedly admitted with head injuries. Kamalakannan told police that two persons attacked him and escaped with the car along with the silver articles kept inside.Later, police located the missing car near New Jail Road and recovered the vehicle and started inquiries with Kamalakannan.
