THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The foundation-stone laying ceremony of the District Planning Committee (DPC) office building would be held on Friday on the premises of the District Panchayat Office, Pattom. The foundation stone would be laid by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The announcement was made by District Panchayat President Remani P Nair at a press meet held in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.The seven-storeyed building which is expected to cost around Rs 9 crore will be completed within 18 months, said Remani. The Corporation, Municipalities and other local self-government institutions would be asked to put in their share. The district office of various departments concerned with planning will start operation from the new building, she added.The planning committee comprising of a 15-member team will be responsible for guiding and implementing the developmental policies of the Central, State and Local Government institutions in the State. Various projects, including five-year master plan, wetland conservation master plan and special spatial planning are prepared and monitored by the committee. The planning committee is chaired by the District Panchayat president and the District Collector is the member secretary of the committee. The stone-laying function scheduled for Friday afternoon on the District Panchayat office premises will be presided over by the Minister for Rural Development K C Joseph. Uthradom Thirunal MarthandaVarma will be felicitated on the occasion. Transport Minister V S Sivakumar, A Sampath MP, Shashi Tharoor MP, K Muraleedharan MLA, Mayor K Chandrika, District Collector P M Francis and the District Panchayat president will be present.
