HYDERABAD: “Language is a reflection of our culture and personality,” said professor Sunaina Singh, the key note speaker at a UGC sponsored National Conference with a theme ‘The Changing Langscape of English’, which was hosted by The Department of English, St Ann’s College for Women, Mehdipatnam. The conference was organised to take a comprehensive look at the changing trends in English Language and how it can be taught to cope with the continuously evolving world. According to Singh, for Indians, there are various aspects to a language — a cultural aspect, technological aspect, among others. Talking about how we should change with time, Singh further added, “As human beings, we are bound to evolve — same happens with culture and technology. We need to adapt and change with time, but we should ensure that we do not lose our essence in the process. Language will keep evolving, but let’s not lose our essence in the process.” Singh concluded her speech by saying, “Let us make sure what words we speak, because we begin with words and end with character.”Post the key note speech, followed various panel discussions on topics like — The pedagogy of English language teaching; Integrating technology into language learning; Emerging trends of English in the corporate world and literature for improving language proficiency and competency and Future of American studies in India and translation. Some of the panelists who gave their insightful thoughts included Dr Acharya Abhimanyu, lead associate, A A A Associates, Dr Indira Nityanand, principal, SR Mehta College, Ahmedabad, Chand Narayan, group head, organisation development at Network 18, Usha Lazarus, senior technical writer, HCL Technologies. In attendance were various teachers and students, who got an opportunity to explore various aspects of the English language. The New Indian Express were the media partners for this event.
