Dale Anderson, a Canadian DJ based out in Mumbai, feels lucky to have made friends in India

Jumping cities comes almost as easy as spinning tunes for this DJ. He was born in Canada and worked there before shifting base to London and finally ended up moving to India a couple of years ago — and that’s the short version of the story of his life. Dale Anderson, known for his house and underground techno beats, counts the destinations he has hit, off his fingers, “So far I’ve played at Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Shillong, Goa, Delhi, Pune, Bhubaneswar, Kochi, Kolkata...” The House spinner will be playing at Pasha in The Park this Saturday. He goes on with evident enthusiasm, “This will be my second time in Chennai.”

For the moment though, Dale is based out of Mumbai, as his family lives in Canada. Obviously, the desi musical journey has been a blast so far. What has the Indian experience been like? He takes a moment before he responds earnestly, “I love the friends I’ve made in India and I feel lucky to know such a great and diverse group of people.”

Moving on to the food though, he laughs, “Oh that’s tough!” Then rattles off, “I love the seafood in Kerala and biryani in Hyderabad. I really love Chicken Jalfrezi as well.” As one would guess, long nights of partying into the early morn can leave you pretty starved for good food. Dale adds in retrospect, “I don’t like paneer at all though, it’s just not my thing.” One survival skill that he has learnt here is that he can give fairly decent auto directions in Hindi!

Asked about collaborating with Indian DJs during his stay, he reveals that that’s actually what brought him to India in the first place. After years of working with British-Indian DJ Anil Chawla, they both decided to come to India to work on a new album. Also, fans can look out for Dale’s latest record After Nine, which was released recently with Arjun Vagale from Jalabee Cartel and his UK mate, Anil. “It’s been great,” the Canadian music spinner smiles. “I’ve loved every minute of this.” Despite hectic schedules this year, he does hint at another album in the making that should be out before the year ends.

As for his Chennai visit this weekend, Dale says, “I know people in Chennai like their music pretty hard, so I’ll be keeping it energetic.”
