Director General of Police (DGP) V Dinesh Reddy said that elaborate security arrangements will be made at Tirumala during the ensuing Navarathri Brahmotsavams to be held from October 15 to 23.
Speaking to mediapersons after reviewing security arrangements here on Tuesday, he said four additional SPs, 30 DSPs, 64 CIs, 168 SIs, 310 ASIs, 1,600 constables and special police personal will be deployed on the hills during the nine-day event.
Three locations have been identified where pilgrims can gather in large numbers to witness vahana sevas, he said, adding all arrangements will be made to avoid stampedes etc during the vahana sevas, particularly the Garuda Seva and Rathotsavam, and the Chakrasnanam day.
Select police personal will mingle with pilgrims in plain clothes to check thefts during the mega event, he said. Police will also use the services of some reformed thieves in this connection. Referring to TTD not providing the required site for the Octopus unit on Tirumala, he said there is every need for continuing the Octopus force on the hills due to terrorist threats.
TJAC threat: Responding to the TJAC leaders threatening to disturb the visit of prime minister Manmohan Singh to the international biodiversity conference in Hyderabad, the DGP said, “We are ready to face any situation.”
Sanders smuggling: On efforts to check red sanders smuggling, he said armed police escort is being given to forest staff and there is proposal to take the support of police and forest personnel of the neighbouring Tamil Nadu state.
Home guards: Stating that the committee headed by VS Kaumidi to look into the home guards issue, has submitted its report to the government, the DGP said it recommended many benefits for home guards, which will be implemented soon.
