ALAPPUZHA: Jesus Boat Club‘s Devas staved off a stiff challenge from Karchial Chundan of the Freedom Boat Club, Kainakari, to lift the 59th Nehru Trophy in a pulsating final held on the Punnamada lake here on Saturday. While 13-time-winner Karichal, led by Jiji Jacob Pollayil, finished second, United Boat Club’s Muttel Kainakary and Payipaddan Chundan of Town Boat Club, Alappuzha, finished third and fourth, respectively.First-time winner Devas, which hit water in 2010, was captained by Swan Chacko. Muttel Kainakary, which had 60 army men as its rowers, could finish only third.Last year’s winner Jawahar Tayankari could finish only second in the preliminary race. Velangadan of Neelima Vidya Bhavan, Alappuzha, bagged first in Churalan category when Devas of Vembanadu Boat Club finished first in Thekkenodi (women) category.In Irruttukuthi ‘B’ grade final, Hanuman-1 of Swan Boat Club, Panagadu, finished first while Chiramel Thottukadavan of St Pious Tenth Boat Club, Mankombu, reached first in the Veppu ‘B’ grade final.
