Delhi Hospital Returns 'Dead Twins' in Plastic Bags to Parents, One Found Alive

New Delhi: In a ghastly case of medical negligence, new-born twins were declared dead by a private hospital in Delhi and handed over to their parents in sealed plastic bags even as one of them was still alive. The parents realised this when they were on their way to perform the last rites.

The hospital has initiated an inquiry and the doctor responsible for the negligence has been asked to go on leave.

The angry parents staged massive protest outside the hospital in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh. The second baby who was found alive is recovering in another hospital. CM Kejriwal has assured that strong action will be taken against those found guilty.

According to the twins' grandfather Pravin Malik, just as they were on their way to perform the last rites, he noticed there was some movement in the packet in which the kids were handed over to them.

"We were utterly shocked at the hospital's apathy," said Pravin.

The Delhi police termed it the "height of negligence" and said it is waiting for medical opinion before an FIR can be filed in the case.

"It is a very weird, shocking incident. It is height of negligence. We have ordered an inquiry and the investigation is on. We are analysing the situation and Delhi police will initiate legal action in the matter," said Deependra Pathak, spokesperson, Delhi Police.

This shocking incident comes just weeks after a city hospital charged the parents of a seven-year-old dengue patient Rs 16 lakh for a 15-day stay at the hospital. At the end of the stay, the girl, Adya, died. The father, Jayant Singh had paid the amount upfront but accused the hospital of inflating the bill and imposing arbitrary costs. Despite the high cost, he said, the doctors paid little attention to Adya’s health.
