Delhi Government To Implement New Rules To Regulate Coaching Centres, Says AAP's Atishi

Delhi Education Minister Atishi on Wednesday said that the AAP-led government would bring a new law to regulate coaching centres in the national capital.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the AAP leader said that the government will constitute a committee comprising government officials and students from different coaching hubs to frame the law. “We are not going to wait for central govt to come up with their rules. We decided to implement rules for coaching centre no matter what coaching centre it is be it UpSC, JEE, NEET we are coming up with regulatory act for these coaching institutes,” he said.

“The law will have provisions for infrastructure, qualification of teachers, fee regulation and preventing misleading advertisements. Public feedback will also be sought,” she said.

Atishi also mentioned that action has been taken against the coaching centres operating libraries and classes in basements. “Strict action will be taken if any officers are found guilty in the incident. Illegal building use led to the Old Rajinder Nagar tragedy,” she said.

She said the report of the magisterial probe into the Old Rajinder Nagar incident will be submitted in the next six days.

The probe will also ascertain which officer ignored a complaint sent to the MCD by an IAS aspirant about the illegal use of the basement at Rau’s IAS Study Circle, where the three students died, according to Atishi.

Atishi said that the MCD initiated an investigation within 24 hours, resulting in the termination of the Junior Engineer (JE) and the suspension of the Assistant Engineer (AE).

Citing the preliminary report, the Delhi Minister asserted that all coaching centres, situated in the area where the students lost their lives, were involved in encroachments that hindered proper drainage.

Three IAS aspirants — Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana and Nevin Dalwin from Kerala — died after the basement of a building housing Rau’s IAS Study Circle coaching institute was flooded following rain on Saturday evening.
