THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The latest statistics on road accidents this year released by the State Police Department clearly bear a warning signal to the motorists in the city who indulge in rash driving. Out of the 2,161 road accidents in the district, which claimed the lives of 235 people in just six months this year, as many as 2,024 mishaps were caused due to rash driving. As many as 36 cases in Thiruvananthapuram city occurred due to drunken driving, the highest in the state in the first six months. The maximum number of accidents involving KSRTC buses in the state also took place in Thiruvananthapuram district - 155. Meanwhile, 86 private buses were also involved in the accidents during the same period. Out of 235 total deaths in the district, 66 took place in the city; while the rest occurred in accidents outside the city limits. In the accidents that took place in the city, 651 people were grievously injured, while 338 people sustained minor injuries. In the Thiruvananthapuram rural, 1,103 people were grievously injured and 160 suffered minor injuries. In the city area, 763 two-wheeler accidents took place and 117 autos, 256 cars and 33 mini lorry/buses were involved. Out of the total number of 859 accidents in Thiruvananthapuram city, 620 mishaps took place during the daytime, while 239 accidents took place at night. Out of these, 218 accidents took place on the National Highway, while 163 accidents occurred on the State Highways. In Thiruvananthapuram rural, out of the 1,302 accidents, 995 happened during the daytime and 307 during the night. Of these, 306 accidents occurred on the National Highway and 124 on State Highways. In the rural region, 969 bikes, 215 autos, 256 cars, 33 mini lorries and 59 private buses were involved in the accidents. KSRTC bus accidents in the rural region stood at 91 more than that of the city region.
