In spite of taking care of the young in a safe and stimulating environment, the workers of the creches run by the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare are a disgruntled lot.
With no revision in the wages in the recent times, the teachers and assistants draw meagre amounts of Rs 1,200 and Rs 800 respectively on a monthly basis. There are 260 creches under the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare across the state. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is the chairman and M K Muneer, Social Welfare Minister, is the vice-president of the council.
Mercy, who has spent 30 long years as a teacher at a creche in Kakkanad, said that, though she has knocked at the doors of the authorities concerned, her plea has fallen on deaf ears.
“Most of the persons working in the creches are struggling to make both ends meet. The government has washed its hands of by saying that the necessary action in this regard will be taken by the Indian Council for Child Welfare,” she said.
Mercy said that, when she entered the service in 1982, her salary was just Rs 150. She said that an increase in the income, as assured by the authorities concerned, prompted her to stick on. “We were told that our salaries would be raised to Rs 3,000. But no action has been taken so far,” she lamented.
The workers are left in the lurch as they lack an association to voice their opinions. Though the council works as per the Central Government Act, the state government could have eased their burden by increasing the salaries, she said.
An additional amount of Rs 300 was promised to the workers by the Ernakulam District Council for Child Welfare as a temporary solution. There are eight creches in the district and the Children’s Park functioning under the council has been garnering quite a handful of revenue.
But the proposal failed to come into effect as the elected body appointed to monitor the activities of the State Council for Child Welfare was dispersed by the UDF government. “Owing to some political skirmishes, the elected body was wound up. Now it has been put under the charge of Thiruvananthapuram District Collector,” sources said.
