CHENNAI: The stage has been set for the biggest round of college admissions under a single window system in the state with the release of the rank list for Tamil Nadu engineering admissions in Chennai on Friday.Briefing reporters at a press conference after releasing the rank list, minister for higher education P Palaniappan said about 1.25 lakh engineering seats in 494 colleges are available for students this year. “The counselling would commence from July 8, for which necessary arrangements are being made,” he added.According to the minister, 1,48,355 applications were received, of which 5,246 were rejected. “We are planning to complete the counselling in 35 days. A 50 per cent concession in government buses is being provided for students travelling from different parts of Tamil Nadu to Chennai to participate in the counselling,” he stated.A total of 5,675 students have applied under special categories such as ex-servicemen, differently-abled persons and sports.Answering a query on higher fees charged by engineering colleges, he said stern action would be initiated against such institutions. Palaniappan pointed out that the Justice Balasubramanian Committee was looking into the fee fixation issue for engineering colleges. “A nominal fee will be fixed so that it does not affect the people,” he added.
